A little something!

Never... I repeat... N E V E R!

I learnt some lessons today after having my lunch! How???

Disclaimer: Okay, now for hardcore non-veg eaters, I might offend you with this post. But just put yourself in my shoes and think that you are a vegetarian turned in to non-vegetarian and don’t know much to eat beyond the chicken!

The situation was: My colleague AJ wanted to give a treat to me and PY (other colleague of mine). Apparently I and PY are veggies (to be specific brahmins) by birth. But as majority of the other Brahmins, we do eat nonveg food out (we are supposed to, no? :D). So today we went out for lunch with AJ who is a complete non-vegetarian

Initially we decided to go somewhere else, but ended up going to the pizzeria. We ordered for some pasta, a pizza n some iced-tea. Now AJ wanted to have some starters and she ordered for something which was made of a squid!!! As she said it’s similar to prawns and we, being a quite unaware about nonveg food, had it. It was not that bad neither was very good. Everything was fine until now. Then... After coming back, I was discussing about the food with Nessa - yes, she is the food-goddess for me :), esp. for nonveg food – n was updating her about what I had for my lunch... I came to know that squid is something like octopus!!! W H A T??? Did you say Octopus? I mean the animal with eight legs or something like that? *speechless-shocked-surprised-n don’t know what all*. After eating it I actually had thought that those were some different kind of prawns *embarrassed*! As being the computer geeks (we are software engineers you know :P :D), I and PY immediately goggled for the picture of the squid on the internet. Hahhh... *sigh*... it was not a pleasant site. :

Anyways by the time I am writing this it’s in my stomach now and I am not going to take that out for anything :D. And nothing like I am upset because I ate some weird animal (which I think millions of people in this world must be eating). But this is a question of my lack of the knowledge and my blind trust on someone whom I don’t know well. (here, I am not blaming AJ at all, because know she was very genuine and didn’t force me to eat it.)

Lesson: Never do anything before having a sufficient (and not necessarily complete) knowledge of anything. Never trust anyone blindly so that you will not be in any kind of awkward situation!

People... Please excuse me if I am over-reacting and over-analysing the thing. But I think these are very small things through which you get to learn lots of important lessons.

  • Prachi Im proud of the way u handled this situation wisely...the way u didn't blame ur friend or anybody else. It's truly commendable how u derived a great lesson out of this experience w.o. hurting anyone else's feelings. If it was some other vegetarian, they would have blamed the non-veg person for not informing em abt Squid. I have vege friends who blame me/laugh at me etc. But Im glad ur above all of em. Well-done girl!

  • Oh man,
That might have been scary...I can imagine eating something without knowing what am eating...am quite a no-no for sea food!

  • I guess I can see the shock, but squid aren't too bad - bit rubbery if you're not too careful. You handled it well.

There is a downside to knowing exactly what you are going to eat as it can cause you to miss an experience. Good one, that is.

    Happy new year btw.

  • Prachi,
Good that you did not blame your friend for whatever happened. (Neither she forced you rite...)
Next time just ask some simple Qs to the waiter about the food you are going to have..
Some time back even I faced the same problem. By choice, am purely a veggie and it so happened that I took raw chicken without knowing it, actually. It had a nice dressings with capsicum. The moment I was about to have it, I saw the small chick pieces. Gaawd!!! I had to change my plate and take again. :))
That made me to be more cautious and to know more about what am I going to eat...

    Have Fun

  • sugerlips: Yes, AJ ordered sea food. I was not knowing that. Oyesters?? Oh god.. Next time I will surely mail you to ask if I can eat THE thing. I don’t want to eat anything in the name of prawns :D. Hugs to you too :)

keshi: Sweetie, thanks. I really don’t like to blame others for nothing. I mean come-one.. I am 25, I should know what I am doing and what I not! How can I blame others for that? Btw, after reading your comment, I am walking two inches above the ground ;)! Love ya sweetie.. huggggs...

ekta: no.. it was not scary because I was not knowing what exactly I am eating, n I thought it’s something different only. Rather it can be scary if you know what you r eating :D

tg: yes.. I handed it well. Rather my stomach handed it well ;).

I agree, I mean now when I tell my friend that I ate squid, I njoy seeing there reactions :D. Ignorance is bliss sometimes ;). I didn’t like it much though!

Harsha: hay.. that’s a good idea to ask a waiter directly. I never thought of it. Thanks ya.. will remember next time.
Ohhh.. good that you came to know before having the non-veg food. N like you, after my squid experience, even I have to be cautious about my food. Because as I said, I could digest it.. but my froend had a terrible stomach upset. She was vomiting also. She had to take a day off. Some food might not suit you. N it’s affecting your health, then better to avoid it!
Btw, nice to see you here :).

  • LOL, geez, I don't know Prachi. Do millions of people eat squid?

I have never. I don't think I could. It just kind of grosses me out, but hey, it was a great chance to try something new. You got to try something that billions of people will never try, and that is pretty cool.

  • Keshi: hehehe.. yes yes.. I am :D

AB: I think millions of people eat squid.. not very sure though, but just assumed :D
Even I would never have had it if I knew what does squid means. But yeah... I liked that, I got to try something which many people will not dare to :D..

By Blogger PrAcHi, at 11/1/07 17:34

  • well since it was not intentional .. i think no one will be displeased .. and yes s squid is an octopus. Did the non-veg tell you that it's a squid .. did she know that you two are vegetarians?

By Blogger Nabeel, at 12/1/07 06:36

  • Octopus is good too.. and so are snails :P You should try em all out ;)

    By Blogger Mr. J, at 12/1/07 11:06

  • i was born into a veggie family, and my mom is quite finicky about food. i took up to eating animals, purely out of choice, for i just wanted to try it. and everytime i did, i'd end up with this feeling of having made my tummy a graveyard (no offense - am just tellign u what i went thru!) and so then, i finally switched back to veggie good, barring milk products!

"But as majority of the other Brahmins, we do eat nonveg food out (we are supposed to, no? :D). "

i think the two don't have anything to do with each other. if we are talking about brahmin - we are talking about the 'name' that got stuck to us ages back, because of our forefathers' profession. if u look at it that way, we are hardly brahmins, any of us :)

By Blogger dharmabum, at 13/1/07 10:16

  • well... personally, i feel if u can eat one animal why not the other? unless if the species is endangered ofcourse.... we should treat them all the same don't you think? whether we treat them as food, or as gods....

    By Blogger 2lrbl, at 15/1/07 11:28

  • I can expect your supposedly "overacting and overanalysing" being a brahmin and then trying out non veg food...trust me when I was surrounded by brahmins back in pune, we used to feed them fried prawns under the name of Cashew-nuts ;)

so this is nothing...calm down :))

I remember trying out squids just a day before leaving pune, when I gave party to ma friends and one of them asked me to try it out....yummm yummmm :)

  • I'd enabled "Bad Behavior" plugin to stop BOTS coming from open proxies to make automated comments on ma blog...so maybe coz of that your comment was not able to get registered on ma blog....maybe ur proxy was in the bad-behaviour dataabase...this plugin can be stupid at times :)

    Apologies....

    Cheeers!!!

  • nabeel: I am not blaming anyone, and to be honest I don’t care as I had it already. N yes, my friend knew that we don’t know anything abt non-veg food, and she told us that it’s squid. That’s why I said nah.. it was MY lack of knowledge!!!

john: snails?? Poor harmless animal. Why to eat them? They are so cute! Btw, as you have tried it already.. do they take time to digest also? What your experience says?? :P

dharmabum: I think it’s completely a person’s choice what to eat and what not. You took right decision because why to eat anything with a guilt feeling.
But as majority of the other Brahmins, we do eat nonveg food out (we are supposed to, no? :D).
This was just a sarcastic comment. Me too personally don’t believe in any of the casts and I don’t mind anyone eating absolutely anything. But as that name has come to us from our forefathers and with that we have got some of their characteristics have become our identity.. so mine was just a pun on that!!!

nlonve (nu-lo-ne-vei): Ofcourse, you are right.. But it’s not the matter of what I had.. But it was what kind of feeling I had after eating the thing!

arz000n: You used to feed them ptawns in the name of cashew-nuts?? That’s bad.. paap lagega! ;) :D
You liked squids? I found the test was okay. Nothing great as such. N actually my reaction was bad esp. after seeing the picture on the net. Otherwise till that ingnorance was bliss! :D
N yeah.. your “Bad Behaviour” plugin was really behaving very badly with my proxy. *grrrrrrr*
